WITH BIG ASS UPDATE:
As advertised, the UPDATE: Um. I wrote this on the wrong gotdamnd blog. End of BIG ASS UPDATE
Awhile back my iron levels were too low to donate blood platelets. This lasted for 6 months. At that time my blood glucometer readings were constantly up in the 300mg/dl - 400mg/dl range.
Since January 2010, my blood sugars have been between 73mg/dl and 130mg/dl. My HbA1C is 5.8 which is much better than the 7.0 that the docs want me to aim for. And since my blood sugars and HbA1C have been better than the typical type 1 diabetic levels, I've been able to donate platelets every other week.
Haven't read anywhere that high glucose equals lower iron levels, but I'm pretty sure there's a connection.
